Lifting people's spirits (South Africa Shows!)

It’s been over a decade that The Backstreet Boys have been rocking and redefining the modern music landscape and on June 14 and 15 fans will get to hear those irresistible melodies and acapella harmonies once again at Sun City’s POSI+IVE festival brought to you by Jacaranda 94.2.

In all, the group has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide. Their first two U.S. releases both received the Diamond Award for sales of more than 10 million: “Backstreet Boys” in 1997 and quintessential “Millennium” in 1999, which reached No. 1 in 25 countries. They have scored a dozen top 40 hits, including top 5 smashes “Quit Playing Games (with My Heart),” “As Long As You Love Me,” Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and “All I Have To Give.”

A lot has changed since 1997, when we first got to know the five singers comprising: Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean and Kevin Richardson. Today, like their fans, they have grown up and started families, recorded solo projects, and appeared on the Broadway stage, all while dealing with the trials and tribulations that accompany fame at an early age.

After taking a break from 2002 to 2005, the band had great success with their Never Gone album and world tour, which included sold out shows all across Australia.

In 2006, after six multi-platinum records, Kevin Richardson decided to take a break from the group to pursue other interests, leaving Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and AJ McLean to record the new “Unbreakable” album.

“Unbreakable,” is gloriously synonymous of the Backstreet Boys’ indelible melodies, hooks galore and finely crafted three- and four-part harmonics, demonstrating that these guys have matured into talented musicians who still love what it is they do so well.

“We love the fact that we can still lift people’s spirits and make them smile with songs they can sing along to. I think we’ve found a magical sound”, says Brian Littrell. “We’ve grown up together with our fans for this long and hopefully we can stay together for another 15 years”.

Backstreet Boys spent a year and a half recording “Unbreakable,” which marks a confident return to the pop template that best defines the group’s sound. First single “Inconsolable,” is a classic piano-driven mid-tempo ballad reminiscent of the group’s biggest hits. Upon its release in September 2007, it was an instant radio hit.

“We couldn’t wait to get back onstage with a big extravagant show using this material as the base,” says Nick Carter. “Half of what we do is vocals and harmonies on our albums, but our other role is as entertainers, which we take great pride in.”
