Soldier of the Month: Quarter 2 of the #DNAWorldTour

The Backstreet Boys have always had fun with theme nights on their fan cruises. From the first cruise and their “Black & Blue” and “International Luv” theme nights to their last cruise, with theme nights such as “Comic Con” and “Millennium Night,” the Backstreet Boys know how to get fans excited about nights stuck on a boat in the middle of the ocean.

When we asked what kind of theme would you pick for a Backstreet Boys cruise as this quarter’s question, some fans went with themes that have already been had, such as themes to show where everybody is from, decade nights such as ‘80s and ‘90s, and Prom Night. Other fans came up with ideas such as Disney Night, College Team Night, Villain Night, and BSB Army night are just a few that were brought up.

For Fallyn Ruzzi from New York, she knows exactly what kind of theme she would pick – a “Harry Potter” theme night.

“I’ve never done a cruise so I’m not sure if it’s been done, but I think it would be fun to see which Hogwarts House each boy would choose to be in,” Fallyn, who has been a fan since 1998, said. “People (can) dressed up as their favorite characters.”

The self-proclaimed “Nick girl” even has an idea for the theme night.

“They could do a wizard rock sort of theme like for the Yule Ball,” Fallyn said. “So many possibilities and so much potential with a Harry Potter theme.”

However, she definitely knows who each boy should be dressed as for a “Harry Potter” theme night.

“I’d love to see Kevin as Snape,” Fallyn said. “Nick and Howie as either Weasley twin, solely because of their back and forth prank wars.

Fallyn also thinks AJ could dress as one of the villains.

“AJ (would be) Malfoy,’ she said. “He’s Slytherin in my eyes, and Brian as Hermione because I think he’d be hilarious. I’m definitely a Slytherin, but I think I’d actually love to dress as Tonks. I love Tonks and her fun hair.”

Where are you from? Upstate NY

What do you do for a living? Not anything interesting. I’m an assistant manager at Speedway

Tell us a little bit about yourself: I’m 30 years old, and my personality is kind of all over the place. Aside from Backstreet Boys, I listen to a lot of early 2000s pop punk and alternative. Grew up on shows like Buffy and Angel, and horror movies.

How long have you been a BSB fan? Since 1998

How did you become a fan? I fell asleep with my tv on one night and I woke up to a music video playing. It was “As Long As You Love Me,” and it was love at first sight/listen.

What is your favorite BSB memory? This is so hard to choose because this past year alone, I’ve made more memories than I have most of my life. I guess maybe meeting them for the first time last November. It was completely surreal to actually get to hug those people whose posters plastered my wall. I’ll never forget just the pure awe that they were right there and trying to stop myself from crying on them. (I did cry. I managed to hold off until I was out of the meet and greet though)

What is your favorite BSB song and why? This can and does change at any given time. Currently gonna give it to “Downpour” though. I can be having the worst day, and I find listening to that song so completely soothing. The lyrics, the harmonies, all of it just puts me into zen mode.

What is your favorite BSB video and why? Just Want You To Know. Because 80s hair bands, guy liner, and not taking themselves too seriously.

Who is your favorite Backstreet Boy and why? Nick. He was the first Backstreet Boy I saw and heard when I woke up to that video. Back then it was just because I thought he was the most beautiful boy I’d ever seen. But now it’s because I’ve watched him go through hell and come out the other side. Because he’s a complete geek. And because I can relate to him in his struggles with his family. I just think he’s such a strong person to have been through as much as he has, and still have the heart of gold he does. I need to stop. I’ll gush about him for way too long.

How has BSB impacted your life? They’ve been a constant with me since I was 8/9 years old. They’ve always been there. I don’t remember much from before they were. I feel like we’ve all grown up together despite not actually knowing each other. And that they help me find that balance between being an adult and reconnecting me with that little girl who fell in love with them 21 years ago.

What is your favorite thing about being a BSB fan? I think the pride, honestly. Most people never thought they’d make it this far. But here we are, after 26 years and watching these guys continue to kill it. Continue to make music they’re proud of. And just prove why they’ve made it so much farther than all the rest. I love knowing that they are literally living legends and still the most down to earth guys ever. I’m just so proud of them and in turn to be a fan of theirs.

Have you been to Vegas? If so, how many times? I went twice. Once last November and once the final week in April. And if they go back, I would DEFINITELY do another show.

What has been your favorite BSB moment over the past almost 26 years? I actually think it had to be the moment DNA debuted at #1. Watching them celebrate, watching their heartfelt thank you videos. It was amazing to see them back at that same level they were on way back when I first got into them. Again: proud isn’t a strong enough word to describe the emotion.

What's one thing you are most looking forward to with the future of the Backstreet Boys? I wish I had an answer for that. I just know I look forward to watching them continue to defy people’s expectations.

You said you'd never done a BSB cruise, what is it that is appealing to you that makes you want to finally go on one of them? Just the idea of spending a few days on a boat with some of my favorite people, and a group of fans who all just get it and feel the same way I do. Plus, I’ve seen videos of past cruises and honestly, it’s also a wicked case of FOMO.
