Moncton Crash
A Moncton woman was killed in a crash Thursday night while driving back from the Backstreet Boys concert in Saint John.
The collision occurred around 11:15 p.m. on McKay Highway near mile marker 142 in Quispamsis.
District 3 RCMP Cpl. Pat Cole says the 24-year-old woman was travelling in the front passenger seat in a vehicle carrying three other people from Moncton, all between ages 22 and 24. The investigation is ongoing but so far police believe the vehicle lost control when attempting to pass another vehicle.
"They had just passed another vehicle, lost control and hit the shoulder," says Cole.
The car left the road and flipped several times injuring the four occupants. Two of them were rushed to Saint John Regional Hospital with serious injuries. The woman died this morning while the other injured person is still in hospital, though the injuries are not life-threatening.
The other two occupants of the vehicle suffered only minor injuries.
An RCMP re-constructionist attended the scene to investigate the collision and police are still in the process of interviewing witnesses. Cole says many of the vehicles on that road at the time of the crash were on their way to Moncton after the concert and some witnesses left the scene before police could interview them.
The name of the victim has not yet been released because family are still being notified.
Police have not yet determined the speed the vehicle was travelling at the time of the crash and so far there's no indication alcohol was a factor. Police believe the woman who died was wearing her seat-belt, but the car is being examined to confirm that.
Cole says no charges are being contemplated at this time, though police will continue to investigate all aspects of the fatal crash before making a final decision.
